Since the system involves syncing, which is quite different from only backing up, there is always a chance of losing photos by mistake as you work across devices. Once you delete the photo on your device, the copy on Google Photos will become the only copy you have. Having said that, you should be cautious to use this platform as your single backup. If you delete a photo on your device from the gallery app of your phone and not from the Google Photos app, it will be still saved online.
